Slack-key guitar to last call
Music changes a wedding. A slack-key guitarist during the ceremony hits differently than a Spotify playlist. We connect you with Maui's working musicians and performers: solo ukulele and slack-key guitar for ceremonies and cocktail hour, live bands that move between island reggae, soul, and modern hits, and DJs who know how to read a crowd. We also coordinate cultural performances, including hula dancers, fire knife shows, and conch shell blowers. Each element is matched to your taste and the flow of your evening.

The Problem
Bluetooth speakers and Spotify playlists where live Hawaiian music should be
DJs who do not know Maui venue noise curfews until the plug gets pulled at 9 PM
No access to authentic cultural performances — hula, fire knife, conch ceremony
Sound systems that cannot handle outdoor ocean-side wind and ambient noise
Music that does not match the energy arc of a destination wedding evening

What You Get
There is a difference between background music and a moment your guests will talk about for years.
There is a difference between playing a Spotify playlist through a Bluetooth speaker and having a slack-key guitarist play "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" in the Hawaiian style while your guests watch the sun drop into the Pacific. Both technically count as wedding music. But they do not feel the same. Not even close.
Maui has a deep and active music community. Slack-key guitar (ki ho'alu) is a Hawaiian tradition that dates back to the 1800s, and there are working musicians on this island who have been playing it their whole lives. We connect you with these artists because they bring something to a wedding that a generic cover band cannot: a sense of place. When a musician plays slack-key guitar during your ceremony on a Maui beach, your guests feel where they are.
For the ceremony, most couples want something acoustic and understated. A solo ukulele player. A slack-key guitarist. A guitarist and vocalist duo. The music starts as guests arrive and take their seats, continues through the processional, pauses during the vows (or plays softly underneath), and picks up again for the recessional. We work with you to choose specific songs for each part of the ceremony, or we can recommend selections if you are not sure what fits.
Hawaiian language songs are popular for ceremonies. "Ka Nohona Pili Kai" (The House by the Sea) and "Puamana" are common choices that carry real emotional weight when performed live. If there is a specific song you want played, even if it is not traditionally Hawaiian, our musicians can learn and arrange it. We have had ceremony musicians cover everything from Jack Johnson to Etta James to an acoustic version of the couple's first-date song. The point is that it is live, it is personal, and it sounds like it belongs on Maui.
Cocktail hour usually calls for something easy and upbeat. A duo or trio playing Hawaiian contemporary and acoustic covers. Think Jack Johnson, Bob Marley, Ben Harper mixed with classic Hawaiian songs. The energy is relaxed. People are eating pupus, drinking their first cocktail, and settling into the evening. The music should match that mood, present but not demanding attention.
For couples who want a more traditional Hawaiian cocktail hour, we can book a hula dancer to perform during this time. A solo hula dancer with a live musician is a beautiful and culturally respectful way to honor the place you are celebrating in. The dancer can also teach a few basic moves to guests who want to participate, which is surprisingly fun and a reliable icebreaker.
This is the biggest music decision for most couples. Bands bring energy and visual excitement. DJs bring versatility and volume control. Both work well at Maui weddings, and the right choice depends on your crowd, your venue, and what kind of party you want.
Live bands. We work with several Maui-based bands that play a mix of island reggae, R&B, soul, funk, Motown, and modern pop. A good live band can read the room and adjust. If the dance floor is packed, they push the energy. If people are still eating, they pull back. The best wedding bands we work with have been playing together for years and can handle requests on the fly. Most of our bands are four to seven pieces: vocals, guitar, bass, drums, keys, and sometimes horns.
DJs. A skilled wedding DJ does more than press play. They manage the energy arc of the entire reception: dinner music, first dance, parent dances, open dancing, and the final push to get everyone on the floor for the last few songs. Our DJs bring professional sound systems calibrated to the venue size and layout. They carry extensive libraries and take requests. For outdoor Maui venues where sound ordinances apply, a DJ is sometimes the better choice because they can control volume more precisely than a live band.
Some couples split the difference: live music for the ceremony and cocktail hour, DJ for the reception. That combination works well and gives you the best of both formats.
Hawaiian cultural performances add something to a wedding that nothing else can replicate. We book several types of performers depending on what fits your evening.
Hula. Hula is a storytelling art form, not a tourist attraction. The dancers we work with perform both hula kahiko (ancient hula, with chanting and traditional instruments) and hula auana (modern hula, with contemporary music). A hula performance during the reception, especially one done to a song with personal meaning, can be one of the most memorable moments of the night. We coordinate with the dancers on song selection and timing.
Fire knife dance. The Samoan fire knife dance (siva afi) is a high-energy performance that works well as a reception closer or as entertainment during dessert. A performer spins a flaming knife in choreographed patterns set to drumming. It is dramatic, it is loud, and your guests will talk about it.
We book experienced performers who carry their own insurance and know the safety requirements for different venue types.
Conch shell ceremony. A traditional Hawaiian wedding often begins with the blowing of a pu (conch shell). The deep, resonant sound carries across the ceremony space and signals the beginning of something significant. We can arrange a conch shell opening for your ceremony, either as a standalone moment or paired with a Hawaiian blessing or chant by an officiant or kahu.
Every entertainment booking includes professional-grade sound equipment sized for your venue and guest count. Outdoor venues on Maui present specific audio challenges: wind, ocean noise, open space without walls to contain sound. Our vendors bring the right speakers, monitors, and microphones to handle these conditions. We also provide uplighting and dance floor lighting for receptions, which makes a bigger difference than most couples expect, especially at outdoor venues that go dark after sunset.
Many Maui venues have noise curfews, typically 10 PM for outdoor sound. We plan the entertainment timeline around these limits so the party peaks before the cutoff. If your venue is Olowalu Plantation House, for example, we know the specific noise rules and build the music schedule accordingly.
