Married on Maui
February 27, 2026

Planning a destination wedding in Hawaii comes with its fair share of excitement — and paperwork. The good news? Getting your Hawaii marriage license is genuinely one of the easier parts of the whole process. No residency requirement. No blood test. No waiting period. Just a little preparation, and you're set.
We've helped dozens of couples through this exact process, and we want to give you the full picture so nothing catches you off guard on your wedding week.
Before we get into the step-by-step process, here's what you'll need on hand:
That's really it. Hawaii doesn't require you to live here, wait any amount of time, or get any kind of medical test.
Do you have to be a resident to get married in Hawaii? Nope. Hawaii has zero residency requirements. Couples from any U.S. state or any country can get a marriage license here — no strings attached.
Start at marriage.ehawaii.gov and fill out your pre-application online. Both of you will enter your personal information, and the system will generate an application you'll bring to your appointment.
This step doesn't issue your license — it just saves you time when you meet with the agent. Don't skip it. Walking in without the pre-application during peak season can mean a much longer wait.
You have two options:
Both partners must be present in person. This is non-negotiable. Bring your government-issued photo ID and your pre-application confirmation. The meeting itself is quick — about 10 minutes.

Your license is issued the same day. Once it's in your hands, the clock starts: you have 30 days to use it. Most couples get their license a few days before the ceremony, not weeks ahead.
Can you get a marriage license online in Hawaii? You can pre-apply online at marriage.ehawaii.gov, but the actual license requires an in-person meeting. Fully remote issuance isn't an option under Hawaii law.
How long is a Hawaii marriage license valid? 30 days from the date of issue. Your ceremony must take place within that window.
After your ceremony, your officiant signs the completed license and is legally required to return it to the Department of Health within 3 days.
Once your signed license is filed, the state processes it. Your certified marriage certificate will arrive by mail in approximately 120 days.
Order more certified copies than you think you'll need. Each copy costs $10, and you'll use them for:
We recommend ordering 4 to 6 certified copies upfront.
Check both of your IDs well before you travel. An expired passport or driver's license will stop the whole process cold. Give yourself at least 6 months of validity on a passport.
Walking into the Department of Health office without the pre-application during summer will cost you extra time in line. The online form takes 15 minutes at home.
This is the big one for peak season (May through October). Licensed agents in Maui get booked up weeks in advance.
Remember that 30-day validity window. Aim to get it 2–5 days before you say your vows.
Our planners handle the logistics end of this for you — we'll connect you with a trusted licensed marriage license agent who can come directly to your resort or venue. We also make sure your officiant is registered with the Hawaii Department of Health.
Getting legally married in Hawaii is genuinely straightforward once you know the steps. The real work is in the planning — the venue, the vendors, the flowers, the food, all the details that make your day feel exactly like you imagined it.
